What Grief Recovery Is

A Structured Path Through Loss

Grief is not just sadness after a death. It is the weight of conflicting feelings that comes when something familiar changes or ends, whether that is a person, a relationship, a pet, or a community you once belonged to. Most people are told to give it time, to stay strong, or to find a way to replace what was lost. Those messages, however well-intentioned, rarely make the weight any lighter.

The Grief Recovery Method® is a structured, evidence-based program that takes a different approach. Over 8 to 10 weeks, you work through a clear, guided process alongside a certified specialist, taking specific steps toward healing rather than simply waiting for it to arrive on its own.

Who It Helps

Every Form of Loss Belongs Here

Grief shows up in more places than most people expect. Society often teaches us to rank pain, to decide whether what we are carrying counts. The Grief Recovery Method® does not work that way. If something has ended or changed in a way that left a weight behind, this program was built for it.

Death of a Loved One

Whether the loss was recent or years ago, expected or sudden, grief does not follow a calendar. There is no timeline on what you are still allowed to feel.

Loss of a Relationship

Divorce, estrangement, the quiet end of a friendship. The grief is real even when there is no funeral and no social permission to mourn it.

Pet Loss

A pet is woven into the rhythm of daily life. When that is gone, the loss deserves the same care and respect as any other form of grief.

Loss of Community

A church, a neighborhood, a group that once felt like home. When the place or the people you belonged to are gone, that has weight.

Major Life Change

A health diagnosis, a job, a career, a home, a sense of safety, or a version of yourself you expected to hold on to. Grief lives in transitions too, not only in the ones that end in death.

How It Works

The Grief Recovery Process, Step by Step

The Grief Recovery Method® is structured by design. Before your first session ends, you will know exactly what the process looks like and what it asks of you.

Building the Foundation

The earliest sessions are about understanding. Your clinician helps you examine what grief actually is, where you learned to think about loss the way you do, and how those patterns may have shaped the weight you are carrying. This is also where the trust that deeper work requires gets built.

Looking Honestly at the Loss

With your clinician guiding the process, you examine what, or who, you are grieving. That includes the parts that are complicated or hard to say out loud. The method does not look away from complexity.

Naming What Was Left Incomplete

Grief is often made heavier by things that were never fully said or resolved. This step gives you a structure for identifying and naming those things, without judgment, with your clinician beside you.

Completing the Work

The exercises, the session work, and the effort you bring between appointments come together here. This is where the method does what it was built to do, and where most people begin to feel the weight shift.

The Work Outside the Room: Between sessions, your clinician gives you structured written exercises to complete on your own and bring back. Each session builds directly on the one before, which means the full 8 to 10 week commitment is not just recommended. It is what makes the method work.

Recovery Rooted in Faith

How Faith Fits Into Your Grief Recovery Care

Loss rarely arrives alone. For many people, grief and faith walk in together, and the questions that loss brings, about meaning, about where God is in the pain, about what life looks like from here, are often too large to hold anywhere else.

Our practice is rooted in Christian values, and for those who want it, faith can become an active part of the grief work itself. At the start of your sessions, your clinician will ask how you would like faith to show up in your care. Some clients want scripture, prayer, and the assurance of God's presence woven directly into their sessions. Others are in a different place with faith right now and prefer to keep it out of the room. That choice is honored just as fully.

People of all faiths, backgrounds, and walks of life are welcome here.

What Sets This Apart

More Than Grief Counseling

A Program With a Path

Most grief support is open-ended. The Grief Recovery Method® is built differently. It is a structured, 8 to 10 week program with defined phases, specific steps, and assigned work between sessions. Clients know exactly where they are in the process from the first session and where they are headed.

A Certification Most Practices Do Not Hold

The Grief Recovery Institute® trains and certifies specialists specifically for this work. Most therapy practices do not offer The Grief Recovery Method®. Abundant Life Affordable Counseling is among the few that do, and every session follows the established protocol of the Grief Recovery Institute®.

Grief Has a Spiritual Side. This Practice Gets That.

Loss carries spiritual weight. The questions it raises about meaning, about God's presence in pain, about what comes next, do not belong in a clinical vacuum. At Abundant Life Affordable Counseling, faith can be part of the grief work itself, exactly as much as each client wants.
