Biblical Integration Counseling in Santa Ana, CA
When Your Faith Is the Thing That Needs Tending
A dedicated space for people navigating faith struggles, identity in Christ, and church hurt, available in person in Santa Ana and virtually throughout California.
Therapy for the Questions Faith Leaves You With
Most people associate counseling with anxiety, trauma, or relationship struggles. But some of the heaviest things a person carries are the ones that do not have a place in a sermon or a small group, because the questions themselves feel too close, too uncertain, or too complicated to say out loud in those spaces.
Biblical Integration Counseling at Abundant Life Affordable Counseling is a dedicated space for that kind of struggle. Not an explanation of how faith gets woven into other forms of therapy, but a specialty built for the person whose relationship with faith is the reason they came.

You Might Recognize Yourself Here
For the Person Whose Faith Has Gotten Complicated
People come to this specialty for different reasons, but what they share is that their faith is where the struggle lives, and that can look like many things.
You might be someone who was raised in a Christian home and now holds beliefs that feel different from your family's, carrying a quiet tension with the people closest to you. You might be asking what God made you to be and not finding an answer that feels settled yet. You might be working through something that happened inside the church, grief or betrayal or confusion that never had a place to go.
Some people come in because they are living with a moral or ethical conflict, something they believe about themselves that does not fit cleanly inside the faith they grew up in. Others are not questioning their faith at all. They love it, and they want a therapist who can meet them inside it. Someone who understands the difference between what God says and what a difficult season feels like.
Identity in Christ. Questions of calling and purpose. Church hurt. The weight of feeling spiritually off-course. If any of that sounds like where you are, this kind of care is built for it.
People of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome here.
Wondering whether faith-integrated counseling is the right fit for where you are? We would be happy to talk it through with you.
A Space That Holds Both the Faith and the Struggle
The early part of treatment is about getting to know you, your history, your faith background, what you are carrying, and what feels most important to work on. There is no assumption about where you are with your beliefs, only a genuine interest in understanding them.
From there, the process is shaped around what you bring in and what you want. Some clients want to open or close sessions with prayer. Some find that a scripture or a biblical story gives language to something they have been living but could not name. Others want faith present but quiet, as a backdrop that informs the work without dominating it. Your clinician will ask you directly at the start how you want faith to move through your sessions, and that preference guides everything from the first conversation.
Because this is Marriage and Family Therapy, the work also addresses the relational and emotional dimensions of what you are navigating. When faith struggles ripple into your sense of self, your closest relationships, or your ability to move forward in daily life, this kind of care is designed to hold all of that.

How This Support Is Delivered
Clinically Grounded Care, Personally Supervised
Biblical Integration Counseling is provided by clinicians working under the direct, individualized supervision of Kathleen Shanahan, MA, LMFT, a CAMFT Certified Clinical Supervisor who brought her own Christian faith with her when she built this practice. Because she oversees each clinician personally, the values and approach at the heart of this work carry through to every session.
This model is also what keeps specialized care within reach. As a nonprofit, Abundant Life Affordable Counseling uses this supervised structure so that clients receive skilled, attentive support at a fraction of what it would typically cost at a private practice. As clinicians build their hours toward full licensure under Kathleen's guidance, every client benefits from individualized supervision at each step.
Sessions are available in person at our Santa Ana office and virtually throughout California.
What Makes This Practice Different
Clinical Training and Christian Faith in the Same Room
Many therapists are Christians. Many pastoral leaders offer faith-based support. What is less common is a clinically trained, licensed Marriage and Family Therapist whose own Christian faith is not a professional add-on but the foundation of everything she built.
Kathleen established Abundant Life Affordable Counseling from that place, and it is the context every clinician here is supervised within. When you come in for this kind of support, you will not need to translate your faith for someone who only knows it from the outside. You will be met by a clinician who holds both genuine clinical training and genuine Christian faith, and who can bring them together in the same room.
