Abundant Life Affordable Counseling

Santa Ana, CA

You have probably had the thought before. Life is heavier than it should be right now, and some part of you knows you could use support. But then the math starts. Can we afford this? Will insurance even help? And underneath that, possibly a quieter question: will a counselor understand what my faith means to me, or will that be one more thing I have to explain and defend?

So you wait. You keep managing on your own, one more week, one more month, hoping things settle down before they have to become a whole conversation.

That gap, between needing care and actually reaching for it, is why Abundant Life Affordable Counseling exists. We are a nonprofit counseling center in Santa Ana, built on the belief that healing should not be something only certain people can afford, and it should not require leaving your faith at the door to receive it. This post is our story. Not a mission statement, but the actual heart behind it.

Why Abundant Life Affordable Counseling Exists

Nonprofit is not just a tax status for us. It is the reason our fees fall well below the standard market rate, and it shapes nearly every decision we make. As a 501(c)(3), affordability is not something we offer when we can, it is the foundation this practice stands on.

The January 2026 KFF Health Tracking Poll found that healthcare is the household expense people worry about most, even more than rent, groceries, or gas. About two-thirds (66%) of adults say they worry about being able to afford healthcare for themselves and their family.

Mental health care is not exempt from that worry, and for many people, it is the first thing to get pushed aside when money feels tight. We started this practice because we did not want anyone here in Santa Ana, or anywhere else in California, to go without care simply because the cost felt out of reach.

To make that possible, we built this practice around a supervised care model. Counseling is provided by Marriage and Family Therapist Trainees and Registered Associates working toward full licensure, each one under the direct, individualized supervision of Kathleen Shanahan, MA, LMFT, a CAMFT Certified Clinical Supervisor, who personally oversees every client's care. You can read more about her training on our About page.

That same commitment is why our reach extends beyond our own front door. We offer faith-sensitive counseling in person throughout Santa Ana and Orange County, and by telehealth anywhere in California.

Faith and Mental Health, Held Together

Our practice is rooted in Christian values, and that is something we hold with confidence and welcome into our work here. Faith is not required. It is offered, and only as much as you want it.

Some people want scripture, prayer, and spiritual reflection active in every session. Others want it present but quiet, or left out of the room entirely. Your clinician will ask early on how you would like faith to show up in your care.

People of every faith, background, and walk of life are welcome here.

If church language and church culture make sense to you, you will find clinicians who understand that world. If it does not, you will still be met with the same compassion and clinical skill. That same openness shapes who feels at home here. We think of the pastor's kid who has never had a safe place to say what they are really carrying, the engaged couple who wants their marriage built on more than excitement, the teenager trying to hold onto their faith and their real struggles without feeling like they have to choose one. Whoever you are and wherever you land, you are meant to find a place here.

For those specifically wrestling with faith itself, whether that is church hurt, doubt, or the tension of believing one thing and living another, we also offer a dedicated specialty in Biblical Integration Counseling.

What Care Feels Like at Abundant Life Affordable Counseling

Most people who find us are already carrying something heavy before they ever walk through our door. We wanted that moment to be met with care, not one more thing to manage.

That shows up in small, specific ways. Warm light instead of fluorescent. Live plants instead of a waiting room that feels clinical. A coffee and tea station, a heating pad if your back is aching, something to keep your kids occupied if they come along with you. None of it is decoration. It is our way of saying, before a single word of your story is spoken, that someone here already cares enough to think about your comfort.

That same attention carries into how we handle the parts you cannot see. When you reach out, we answer the same day, even if it is only to say your message arrived and we are on it. When it is time to match you with a clinician, we start with your specific concerns and story, not a general intake process. And once you are here, you stay a person to us, not a case number moving through a system.

Affordable Care You Can Trust: Our Supervised Clinician Model

It is fair to wonder what it means to work with a trainee or registered associate instead of a fully licensed therapist. It means your clinician is actively building their clinical skill under the close, individualized guidance of Kathleen Shanahan, a CAMFT Certified Clinical Supervisor with training in EMDR, Theraplay, Family Systems Trauma therapy, and the Grief Recovery Method.

Every associate and trainee is carefully selected for their compassion and clinical skill, and every case is reviewed and guided by Kathleen personally. That supervision is not a formality. It is what allows this practice to offer specialized, evidence based care, including EMDR, play therapy, family systems work, grief support, and couples counseling, at a fraction of the typical cost. You can see the full breakdown of session fees and insurance on our Fees and Insurance page.

We are currently in network with Aetna and Blue Shield of California for psychotherapy services, with Medi-Cal and Kaiser coming soon. Reduced fee applications are also available for clients who qualify, because we never want cost to be the final answer to whether someone gets care.

Counseling That Honors Your Story and Your Faith

If cost or fear of being misunderstood has kept you from reaching out until now, we hope this gives you a clearer sense of who is actually on the other side of that decision. What you have been carrying is real, and reaching out for support does not undo anything you believe. It can sit right alongside it.

Abundant Life Affordable Counseling is located in Santa Ana, serving Orange County in person and clients throughout California by telehealth. If you are ready to explore counseling that honors your story and, if you choose, your faith, you are welcome to reach out.

We would be honored to walk with you. You can request a session whenever you feel ready.
